SACRIFICIAL ANODES
Sacrificial anodes are commonly used in marine environments to protect metal structures from corrosion.
A sacrificial anode is a metal that is bonded to the hull of the vessel and oxidises faster than the metal it protects. In other words, the anode sacrifices itself to protect the vessel from rusting.
Anodes are available in different materials depending on the type of water:
- Zinc anode for salt water
- Magnesium anode for fresh water
- Aluminium anode for brackish water
In addition, they not only protect the hull, but can also be installed in various steel structures, such as:
- Ballast tanks
- Water storage tanks
- Pipelines
- Heat exchangers
- Hot water boiler
- Propeller shaft
- Drive shafts
- Engine body
Some tips to help you get the most out of them:
- They should always be in contact with metal, so they should never be painted.
- We recommend that you change the anodes after painting the hull or applying any type of product.
- If you see that the anode is not wearing out, it is not doing its job: check what is wrong.
- Boat anodes should be checked and replaced annually.
